A Deep Breath

Gray and black, save for the snow
Sky behind a veil
Of a haze of dust, of radiation
Empty towers glare
Rising from the snow the dead city looms
Haunted by the spectres of the long deceased
The wind bites down sharp as a blade
Movement ahead
Spectres and ghosts; the dead are not dead
Voices he hears
Striding through snow and into the earth
The world above burns and below it breathes
Unseen voices speak and unseen figures lurk
Haunting his path, observant
A brew to save the life of someone on the cusp
Of the dead cityโs hold
He has arrived! He has arrived!
The dead city looms, the dead city writhes
Abandoned and forgot, only ghosts remain
The living long consumed, the sun is no more
Tunnels of the earth will lead him on his way
Paved with the bodies of the starved and betrayed
The figures see his steps, his every single move
From the storm they reside counting his breaths
The past cries out in shrieking tones
Demanding that it will not be forgot
Its voices cryโa chorus of the burned
Those lost in war, eternally here
The sky still gray but the moon revealed
A pearl in the skyโso luminous!
The mask is shatteredโeach breath a flame
Clawing his way from the dead cityโs grasp
The rattle of the train awakens him
The sun in the sky, the warmth on his face
Looming structure gone, the figures long depart
Bright eyes greet him
They have arrived! They have arrived!
From snow and dust and fire they have survived
Loved ones at his side, her hand wrapped in his own
Deep breaths reassure, that this is their home
From the ashes of the war, from hell long endured
From tunnels in the earth, and an exodus home
Sons and daughters held on shoulders high
Deep breaths reassure a new life

Waking in a sea of flesh and gore
Cycled through this horror again
Obscured memories linger in my mind
Somehow I know Iโve suffered this before
Her eyes gaze upon me, uneasy and afraid
Was I a monster or something best forgotten
Iโd wage a war and kill for her
But why do I feel this way?
The worlds birth us all
We birth all the worlds
Cogs and gears; sinew, bone and flesh
Recycled and abused in unending trial
Failure deemed I am tossed to the maw
I watch her eyes swallowed by the dark
Left to wallow in cadaverous waves
Where towering shadows chew on the dead
From the bowels of a star-like womb
I climb through the meat and bone
Iโve lead myself this way before
The shadow of myself calls
The world unfurls around me, layers and layers
I peel back the skin and swim in the veins
The deeper I dive, it reveals itself
Revealing myself insideโrevealing myself
The worlds birth us all
We birth all the worlds
Cogs and gears; sinew, bone and flesh
Recycled and abused in unending trial
Am I afraid to remember
Afraid of what I am
My memories filtered
Through these great organs
The world howls
I understand the pain
I ascend breaking through bone
Tasting the blood as it showers my face
Gnawing on the muscle, I climb
I remember what I am
Betrayed and killed a thousand times
Her eyes still enrapture me
But at the bridge of our worlds
We can only be two lords among the stars

My mind is a home for sprites and spirits alike
Souls not of this earth, minds not of this star
A graveyard for aliens, the resting spot of Gods
A voice for the voiceless, their words on my lips
Now a demonโs taken hold and darkened their light
Clouding my voice and obscuring their words
Filling out my body with every sickly breath
Taking my voice as his own
I feel a slave in my own flesh
I feel their eyes peering through mine
I feel their hatred for what I love
I feel their fury at my persistence
Now the demon speaks and strangles my chords
Now the demon postures and corrupts my notes
My passions are drained from me
All I have left is the will to endure
The closer I draw the more its fury swells
An ocean of flames kissing my lungs
With every step I take the creature shadows me
Through my eyes it will see itself
Can you not hearโcan you not see
Can you not feel what itโs doing
Can you not feelโcan you not see
Can you not hear what itโs saying
Can you not hearโcan you not feel
Can you not see how itโs glaring
I can not hearโI can not feel
I can not see my own freedom
Drained of all I had, emptied of my strength
I face the demon, infiltrate its soul
I pierce the demonโs mind and stride his landscape
Cresting a valley of flesh, approaching a sea
A sea of light, a sea of souls
Candles to the horizon
And each one a soulโa soul like mine
And each one a lifeโa life I must take
A million souls enthralled, a million souls I end
I weep into my hands as I sweep away their flames
I feel a burden fall away from me
The world grows dim and brighter still
For each life gone taken by the beast
I will welcome them in me

From frozen chasms to white fields
From foreign tundra to familiar stars
My memories are an event horizon
So much is lost, yet still they are there
A thousand bodies mine, a thousand eyes to see
The lives running down the length of my spine
So quickly I am reduced to a single human mind
In the end itโs a single step, and then the next
A fractured mind spread across
The surface of our worlds
Embedded in my hull
Burrowed in my core
An empire draped across;
A kingdom lain atop the stars
Justice and propiety
In benefit of the supreme good
It had always been so easy just to comply
So easy not to see whatโs been happening
The longer I was blind, the harder it was to see
And now my role as Justice, poetically reprised
From frozen chasms to white fields
From foreign tundra to familiar stars
My memories are an event horizon
So much is lost, yet still they are there
A thousand bodies mine, a thousand eyes to see
The lives running down the length of my spine
So quickly I am reduced to a single human mind
In the end itโs a single step, and then the next
You can kill me
Erase my identity
And shape me to be
What you deem right
But hear my curse
A fallen cultureโs words
What you destroy Will destroy you
A fractured mind spread across
The surface of our worlds
Embedded in my hull
Burrowed in my core
An empire draped across;
A kingdom lain atop the stars
Justice and propiety
In benefit of the supreme good
From frozen chasms to white fields
From foreign tundra to familiar stars
My memories are an event horizon
So much is lost, yet still they are there
A thousand bodies mine, a thousand eyes to see
The lives running down the length of my spine
And large their endings loom over their lives
What you destroy will destroy you

Cold and dark, she awakes in the wheel
Lights flash and voices howl, she is not alone
Her body recalls the things she has done
The things done to her
Chaos dictates the order of the ship
Prisoners and crew distraught and afraid
In their midst she sees their face
The visage of her torturer
Vengeance drives her every move
The ship must endure only until
She can drive the knife into his throat
Nothing else matters to her
Tear apart the ship
Think not of whatโs ahead
Death consumed her
Before she was here
And now death remains
Haunting her still
The war disfigured her soul
Why should she not take for herself
The world took from her everything and more
Why should she not kill for herself
Indulge in what they had made her
Facing extinction, a not uncertain death
They frantically try to salvage their fate
The ship is slowly forgetting us all
Unable to remember its past or its crew
Desperate to satiate her lust
She must choose: his death or her life
Carving their lives onto their flesh
Carving history into the ship
Etching their pasts as best as they can
Embed it in their skin for this is all they have
Carving into herself as all the others do
Thereโs been enough death and itโs no good to her
Science, faith, and art, their loved oneโs names
Etching their futures into their flesh
