Etching Futures Into Flesh

from Othercosmic Divinations I by Lascaille's Shroud

/

lyrics

Cold and dark, she awakes in the wheel
Lights flash and voices howl, she is not alone
Her body recalls the things she has done
The things done to her

Chaos dictates the order of the ship
Prisoners and crew distraught and afraid
In their midst she sees their face
The visage of her torturer

Vengeance drives her every move
The ship must endure only until
She can drive the knife into his throat
Nothing else matters to her

Tear apart the ship
Think not of what’s ahead
Death consumed her
Before she was here
And now death remains
Haunting her still
The war disfigured her soul

Why should she not take for herself
The world took from her everything and more
Why should she not kill for herself
Indulge in what they had made her

Facing extinction, a not uncertain death
They frantically try to salvage their fate
The ship is slowly forgetting us all
Unable to remember its past or its crew
Desperate to satiate her lust
She must choose: his death or her life

Carving their lives onto their flesh
Carving history into the ship
Etching their pasts as best as they can
Embed it in their skin for this is all they have

Carving into herself as all the others do
There’s been enough death and it’s no good to her
Science, faith, and art, their loved one’s names
Etching their futures into their flesh
