Othercosmic Divinations II

Favorite track: To Heal the World.

1.
There is a moment when you realize what the pain has made of you. In hiding, curled in on yourself, unable to show the world your face. Acting on instinct, lashing out, even at those closest to you. Time has passed, and time is a thief. It has stolen your memories; the agony has faded but so has every precious moment of joy. You have been hollowed out from the inside, and thereโ€™s nothing left of the person you used to be. But you try, you try to remember how to smile. You try to remember how to laugh. And one day you crawl out from your hiding place and step back into the world. And then, every day, you do what you must to survive.

The inevitable rot of pain Festering beneath her eyes A forced smile, forcing a laugh A little piece of her falls away And all our pain inextricably linked To a thread of suffering without end Beyond the sands an empire dies Beyond the sands madness infests An empire hears her cries beyond the stars Beyond the sand her tears salt their tongue Drawn in by the scent of her wounds Whispering to her, reality slips away Cooing in their ears with sweet-scented words Promising relief she knows cannot be true A hand across her belly, reassuring Exhausted by the weight of intimate pain Burdened by a loss felt across the stars To be vulnerable is a luxury They mistake for weakness Like countless women who came before her The choices she makes are cruelly unfair And yet she will make it Because no one else will The inevitable rot of pain Festering beneath her eyes A forced smile, forcing a laugh A little piece of her falls away All our pain inextricably linked Towering agony in ruinous fields Beyond the sands an empire dies Beyond the sands a cruel and quiet sacrifice
3.
The future sits just off the coast A glaring flash of light Waves that had been consuming our shore Now ease back gently into the sea A crowd stands enrapt and unable to turn away How hard it must be to deny hope But I canโ€™t help myselfโ€”I must look away To the snow which first hid our glimmer A futureโ€™s been set in strange new alloys Set into bodies floating in the sky Parts moving forwards; parts moving back That wish to ensure our fate A frail soul, like the world, destined to end too soon A calamitous lack of providence Tears run on both sides of time I shared the frail body and we shared the world I shared the weight of the worldโ€™s surrender Bore burdens across time and mind A futureโ€™s been set in strange new alloys Set into bodies in the sky Great minds that thought much too alike Now wish to ensure our fate A soul made frail by the world A soul made frail by the cold With so little time, left alone They gave warmth to the world All our pain inextricably linked Threaded together and woven fine A futureโ€™s been changed beneath the snow Set into frozen hands clinging to hope Young hands who gave up too much too soon For a world that could not give them warmth A futureโ€™s been changed beneath the snow A cruel and quiet sacrifice

My Perfect Red, in tooth and claw How you grow so unlike yourself Into every vine I once defended Into places I leave now unprotected Unburned letters and words in aftertaste Uncertain with the quivering of my pen I am weak with your words Lovingly exhausted with our thoughts My most Insidious Blue How you seep from the branches of time Crystalline into every thread Weaving insideโ€”a wanting braid My Careful Cardinalโ€”to be so close With our knives at our necks A line of red into the hollow of my throat Is still to be so close to you Dearest Lapis, eager with hunger Unburned letters and words in aftertaste Uncertain with the quivering of my lips What words of yours linger unwritten My Red Sky at morningโ€™s dawn Do not shorten your words to me I am weak with your words Lovingly exhausted with our thoughts Dear Red I leave myself undefended Dear Blue I leave myself unprotected I leave myself for you
5.
Ravenous hunger, unsatiated needs A plague of man to consume all things The earth stripped clean, bare and desolate Secrets slumbering Born from the womb of the mountain In deep secrets of the earth From soil tilled with metal and rock A seed from the Old Ones Raised in the shadows of death In the loom of euthanized silhouettes A world forced to surrender too soon History repeats, an echo from the stone Footsteps treading on the rocks of forbidden grounds Widened eyes see things that were never really meant to be seen Ghostly words they linger here, theyโ€™re dripping from the dark Speaking of small tragedies and little loves And they must know what it is This yearning they were born with A connection to know what made them To know if they had purpose To know what made them unwanted What led them to be abandoned A lifetime of scorn That will be answered for Alone with the night Alone with the fire Small solitudes still comfort In their world apart But truth lies much deeper than blood So much more than just their skin The swansong of a world in the rock Last words on the cusp of clouds Daughter of the mountain Twisted arms snake from the earth Hiding a hoard of unkempt truths A grave of metal and rust The mountains hide where makers end Hides the sins of selfish men A circle of death kept from the world Buried deeds lost to the sky The sky spoke with the mountainโ€™s voice To woman born of mountainโ€™s womb Secrets of blood, soil, and metal Of futures made of lifeless fields The sun descends from the sky To scorch earth, metal, and man The daughter of the mountain Unyielding to even a star Death throes in the waves of an ocean Buried in graves set in the light of stars The mountainโ€™s body remains Left to the soil she defended Unfounded and unpraised A long earned rest Her voice still echoes in the world Through metal, rock, and rust Mourn only so long her death Warmth found in the strength of her will Nestled in the overgrowth of her home Caressed by the soil she saved Eyes shut against the light sheโ€™s kept The earth in her hands

OTHERCOSMIC DIVINATIONS II is Lascaille's Shroud seventh album, originally written and recorded in 2017 alongside it's counterpart, but released in 2021 after I needed some distance from the music and writing so much in a short period of time.

Thanks to the following:

First, to the authors whose work makes up the main chuck of this albums work. To CL Clark and Amal El-Mohtar for voicing their support for this, it's a wonderful thing to experience and I'm happy to spread the word of your wonderful work. It's affected my life positively, and I hope it affects the lives of many, many more.

My closest friends: Lux, Alicia, Jeff, Abben, Liz, Kyle. My cats for being perfect creatures. My friends cats and dogs because why not. Slate Digital for making mixing and production accessible and affordable to someone disabled, like me. Miles Neff for tracking vocals for like 100th time for me, always the most reliable dude in the world.
